The Equipment Operator performs a variety of skilled manual tasks in general construction and maintenance of city streets, water distribution and sewage collection systems. In carrying out these duties, this position operates and maintains a range of construction machinery, including an excavator, backhoe, skid-steer, vac-truck, street sweeper, boom mower and roller, as well a variety of power and hand tools. This full-time position is paid on a salary basis with overtime eligibility.
Qualifications
Minimum Education
High School Diploma or equivalent (GED)
Experience
The position requires two years of hands-on, verifiable experience in operating and
maintaining relevant construction machinery and equipment, with a proven safety record
One year in public works or related work experience highly desirable
Certifications/Licenses
Required:
Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid Oregon State Class C Driver’s License at the time of appointment
Possession of, or the ability to obtain within a timeframe established by the City, an Oregon Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) with air brake and tank endorsements.
Possession of, or the ability to obtain in a timely manner upon appointment, an Oregon flagger’s certification card
Possession of, or the ability to obtain within a timeframe established by the City, a Grade I Water Distribution Operator Certification and/or a Grade I Wastewater Collections Certification
Preferred:
Hazardous Materials (HazMat) endorsement. Obtaining the endorsement requires a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) security threat assessment, payment of applicable fees and successful completion of the required knowledge examination.
Employees must provide documentation of all required licenses, certifications, and endorsements upon request. Employees who do not possess the required credentials at the time of hire must demonstrate satisfactory progress toward obtaining them and successfully secure all required licenses, certifications, and endorsements within the timeframes established by the City. The City will pay for authorized certification and licensing fees.
Conditions of Employment
This position requires the successful completion of a criminal background check, drug screening and may include verification of professional references. The employee must maintain a valid driver’s license and a safe driving record. The employee must comply with all City policies, participate in ongoing training and professional development and successfully complete any applicable probationary period.
