Position Overview
The Wastewater Division of the City of Canby Public Works Department has an exciting career opportunity for a Wastewater Operator III that also possesses the ability to perform journey level equipment preventative maintenance, troubleshooting and is experienced in the installation and repair of wastewater mechanical equipment and systems. This multifaceted position will work with a dynamic operations team and will complete daily operational tasks, including laboratory work, grounds keeping, facility maintenance and preventative maintenance work in a collaborative work environment. A limited maintenance electrician (LME) license is desired.
The anticipated work schedule is Monday through Thursday 6 am to 4:30 pm, with an on-call and weekend plant check rotation.
This position may underfill as an Operator I or Operator II depending on experience and certifications. Applicants with strong mechanical skills are encouraged to apply. First application review will be on October 8, 2024. This position is open until filled and may close at any time.
Operator I Salary: $29.95-$38.62
- High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).
- One year of specialized or technical training beyond high school in water quality or wastewater or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the duties of the job as those listed above.
- Oregon Grade I or provisional Grade I Wastewater Certification or ability to obtain within 18 months.
- Valid Driver’s license required.
Operator II Salary:$31.92-$41.16
- High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).
- One year of specialized or technical training beyond high school in water quality or wastewater treatment and at least 3 years of experience as an operator or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the duties of the job as those listed above.
- Oregon Grade II Wastewater Operator Certificate with ability to obtain Grade III Wastewater Certificate within 1 year.
- Valid Driver’s license required.
Performs a variety of highly skilled technical work to operate and maintain the City’s wastewater treatment plant equipment and facilities under the direction of the Wastewater Treatment Plant Supervisor. Repair equipment, provide basic electrical trouble shooting, instrument calibration, biosolids/ sludge processing, laboratory testing and analysis with minimal oversight. On call rotation required as necessary.
Supervisory Responsibilities
No supervision/leadership exercised.
Duties and Responsibilities
The individual in this position is expected to engage in the following work-related activities with minimal supervision. It is the highest level of non-supervisory wastewater operator.
Maintenance and Operations
- Perform highly skilled technical maintenance tasks including lubricating equipment, replacing belts, and cleaning filters.
- Perform routine plant maintenance and cleaning activities, implement appropriate repairs to equipment, grounds and buildings with maximum proficiency and minimal supervision.
- Calibrate analyzers and meters (PH meters, D.O meters, level transducers, valve actuators, etc.) using established manufacturer guidelines.
- Conduct routine meter readings, follow established schedules, and enter data into applicable computerized system.
- Create and maintain accurate records of systems operation and maintenance.
- Drive and operate a variety of vehicles and equipment including mowers, forklifts, tractors, and front-end loaders.
Testing and Compliance
- Collect samples using established procedures.
- Demonstrate proficiency in required laboratory tests including but not limited to: BOD, CBOD, Total Suspended Solids, Total Solids, pH, Alkalinity and Ammonia. Occasionally assist other employees with sampling for Priority Pollutant Scans, Whole Effluent Toxicity, Copper BLM, Biosolids analysis, and other required sampling. May include setting up samplers, pouring off samples, taking grab samples, filling out chain of custody or packing samples for transport.
Other Duties
- Serve as a technical expert to other staff members.
- Assist other staff as workload and staffing levels dictate. Maintain proficiency by attending training and meetings, reading materials, and meeting with others in areas of responsibility. Maintain work areas in a clean and orderly manner.
- Comply with safety requirements of the position and actively promote safe work practices.
- Perform other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.
- May be required to respond to after-hours emergencies and other work-related situations.
- Maintain cooperative working relationships with City staff, other organizations, and the public.
Competency Profile
The individual in this position is expected to possess or acquire:
- Ability to use tools and equipment utilized in grounds maintenance such as shovels, rakes, trimmers, edgers, mowers, and other misc. hand power tools.
- Requires a working knowledge of tools used in the general diagnostic and repair of pumps, motors, and control panels such as screw drivers, wrenches, feeler gauges, wheel pullers, micrometers, general purpose electrical testers etc. Reading and understanding general assembly and maintenance directions.
- Ability to read blueprints and piping diagrams. Redirect flows for maintenance or operations during plant repairs or upgrades.
- May also require possession of or ability to obtain any or all of the following certifications: current CPR/first aid card, bloodborne pathogen training, work zone traffic safety certification, forklift certification, confined space entry, and/or hazardous material certification.
- Requires extensive knowledge of operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant. Ability to receive work direction and convey clear precise information related to equipment performance and process control. Ability to interpret basic test results from wastewater lab to implement basic process control strategies.
- Basic computer skills.
Job Qualification Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).
- One year of specialized or technical training beyond high school in water quality or wastewater treatment and at least 5 years of experience as an operator or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the duties of the job as those listed above.
- Oregon Grade III Wastewater Certification.
- Valid Driver’s license required, with acceptable driving record.
Preferred Qualifications
- Any additional certifications relevant to the maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant.
- Possession of higher-level certifications than those required.
- Limited Maintenance Electrician (LME) license.

- Moderate Risks/Discomforts: 70 % of the work period) require special safety precautions, e.g., working around moving parts, carts, or machines; exposure to contagious diseases or irritant chemicals. Employees may be required to use protective clothing or gear, such as masks, gowns, coats, boots, goggles, gloves, or shields.

Hours required
Weekend work and attendance at evening meetings may be required. May be subject to call-out after normal hours and may be included in duty rotation.

Additional Information:
