Utility Worker I

West Slope Water District

SALARY RANGE: Hourly $25.77 – $34.09 (Monthly $4,466 – $5,909) Depending on Experience
JOB TYPE: Full-Time (40 hours per week), Permanent          
CLOSING DATE: Open until filled. First review February 15, 2023

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Utility Worker performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled manual labor tasks in construction, maintenance, landscape, and repair operations of District facilities including installing, maintaining, or repairing water lines and reading water meters.  Assignments involve the safe use of a variety of hand and power tools and the safe operation of construction equipment and maintenance equipment.  This position also performs a variety of tasks such as but not limited to routine maintenance of buildings, equipment, and vehicles. Work may be performed in inclement weather for extended periods of time and hazardous locations such as street areas, ditches, and confined spaces.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Performs the manual tasks related to water service maintenance and repair, water line excavation in roadways and public rights-of-way, water meter reading, and underground water line location work.  Must be able to read work orders, complete forms and write simple reports on work, time, and material used. After hours on-call pager duty is required during one week per month.

MNIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Must have a high school diploma or GED and possess a valid Oregon driver’s license.  Must possess knowledge of basic types of tools and their appropriate usage, knowledge of standard safety procedures, skills in the use of light maintenance construction equipment, ability to maintain accurate records, ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing, and ability to work effectively with employees and the public.  Must be able to bend, stoop, crawl and work in restricted areas and be able to lift equipment and materials weighing up to 50 lbs.

PREFERRED / DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  Possession of, or ability to obtain within 12 months, an Oregon Health Authority Water Distribution Operator certification and a Commercial Driver’s License; general experience and knowledge in at least two of the following areas: drinking water industry, construction industry for installation and or repair and maintenance of water systems, irrigation systems, street repair, or any equivalent combination of experience and training.
