Engineering Technician

City of Stayton

Join our team and play a key role in shaping the future of Stayton’s public infrastructure! The Engineering Technician supports the City’s Public Works Department through a variety of technical and field work, including surveying, data collection, drafting and design, construction inspection, and contract administration for public improvement projects. This position also oversees the City’s right-of-way permit and backflow prevention programs, helping ensure safe and reliable public systems.

This opportunity may be filled at the Engineering Technician I or II level, depending on the successful candidate’s experience and qualifications.

EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Engineering Technician I: Associate’s degree in civil engineering technology and a minimum of two years of related experience or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Considerable knowledge of mathematics, engineering computations, design and public improvement construction and inspection. Experience using Civil 3D drafting/design software and drafting and preparing engineering drawings. Ability to prepare, organize, and maintain engineering field and office data, reports, and systems; develop cost estimates on complex projects; interact positively and effectively communicate complex technical information, orally and in writing, to contractors, developers, property owners, employees, consultants, other governmental agency representatives, City officials, and the general public. Ability to effectively apply oral and written communication skills in concise reports. Use of a computer and peripheral devices such as printers and plotters. Knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite. Public Improvement Construction Inspection. Knowledge of civil engineering principles, practices, and methods as applicable to a municipal setting and City policies, laws, and regulations. Working knowledge of maintenance activities and requirements related to municipal utilities.
  • Engineering Technician II: Associate’s degree in engineering science, engineering technology, or a related field and five years of experience in the practice of civil engineering technology, including at least three years of progressively responsible technical experience directly related to the public improvement or private development project management and construction inspection, or any satisfactory equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience relevant to the position. Working knowledge of mathematics, civil engineering principles, practices, methods, computations, and design. Knowledge and understanding of public improvement management and construction inspection. Experience using Civil 3D drafting/design software and manual drafting techniques. Ability to prepare, organize, and maintain engineering field and office data, reports, and systems; develop cost estimates on complex projects; interact positively and effectively communicate complex technical information, orally and in writing, to contractors, developers, property owners, employees, consultants, other agency representatives, City officials, and the general public. Working knowledge of maintenance activities and requirements related to municipal utilities. Knowledge of procedures and regulations pertaining to workplace safety, confined workspace, and working in hazardous and potentially hazardous locations. Skill in the use of tools related to position, as well as skill in drafting and preparing engineering drawings, inspection reports, surveying, and flagging. Ability to operate a computer and peripheral devices such as printers and plotters. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Oregon driver’s license.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

  • Engineering Technician I: Salary range is $54,858 to $75,872 annually depending on qualifications and experience.
  • Engineering Technician II: Salary range is $68,079 to $94,158 annually depending on qualifications and experience.
  • The City also offers a comprehensive and competitive benefit package, including:
    • Vacation: Two weeks accrued annually (increases with longevity)
    • Holidays: 11 holidays annually and 2 floating holidays
    • Sick Leave: 8 hours per month
