The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality has 3 full-time opportunities available for an Assessment Specialist (Natural Resource Specialist 2) in Hillsboro, Oregon.
- 1 position is permanent
- 1 position is permanent; however, it was identified for potential reduction during the 23-25 legislative session. There is no certainty in reductions being implemented at this time. The final determination will be after legislative session ends late June 2023.
- 1 position is limited duration through December 31, 2024, with the potential of being extended or becoming permanent pending Budget and Legislature approval

What you will do!
As an Assessment Specialist Data Steward at the lab – You will directly support the activities of the water quality permitting, TMDL or volunteer monitoring program by providing assistance with data compilation, analysis, and review. You will gather, review, and evaluate data for permit development, integrated report development, and TMDL development using R and other statistical programs. In addition, you will assist with data management, data interpretation, data review, and report writing related to water quality program issues.

What are we looking for?
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in a physical science, environmental science, natural resources, or closely related field, AND 2 years of experience in a natural resource or environmental field (an equivalent combination of education and experience is acceptable).
Candidates who are most competitive will also reflect the following:
- Demonstrated understanding of environmental justice and the historical impacts for marginalized and underrepresented communities; ability to take personal responsibility for increasing their knowledge of environmental justice and diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
- Professional experience with R and/or other statistical software for data processing.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Access).
- Experience working with geographic information or geo-referenced data, including experience using GPS, GIS, maps, or other sources to track and communicate location information.
- Experience applying quality control information to define the quality of measurements or data.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to provide clear, concise, and compelling communication of policy and technical information tailored to the needs of diverse audiences.
Work is primarily in an office setting. Statewide travel may be required to perform field work. Field work involves collecting environmental samples in a variety of situations, including inclement weather. Statewide travel is also required to conduct trainings, visit with specific facilities, and attend conferences.
